A Doberman puppy advertised for a fraction of the market price is not a bargain. It is an invoice that arrives later, with interest.
The right question is never "how much is the puppy". It is "what will this dog cost over the next twelve years". Those two numbers rarely match.
What a planned litter actually pays for
When you pay a serious breeder, you are paying for work that happened before the puppy existed:
- Health testing on both parents. Echocardiogram and Holter monitoring for dilated cardiomyopathy, von Willebrand testing, hip evaluation. Each round costs real money and is repeated over the years.
- Pedigree study. Several generations analysed so that hidden faults on both sides are not stacked together.
- Supervised pregnancy and whelping. Ultrasound, count x-ray, a vet on call. Emergency C-sections are not rare.
- The first eight weeks. Deworming schedule, first vaccines, microchip, high quality nutrition for the dam, and the socialisation that shapes the adult dog.
- Official registration. Verified genealogy with the national kennel club.
Where cheap collects the difference

Five signs the price is low because something is missing
- No health tests shown, not even on request.
- Visits are never possible, not even by video call.
- Puppies available all year round. A planned litter is a rare event, not permanent stock.
- The dam never appears, or appears thin and apathetic.
- Delivery before eight weeks of age. The puppy loses the window that builds temperament.

When a high price is also a warning
To be fair, expensive is not proof of quality either. Some kennels charge premium prices and still show no testing, betting that a high number reads as quality. The defence is identical at both ends of the scale: ask for documents, ask for tests, ask to see the mother. Price is a consequence, never evidence.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy cheaper and run the health tests later?
It does not work that way. The tests that matter are the ones performed on the parents before the mating, because that is where inheritance is decided. Once the puppy is born, the dice have been rolled.
Does the pedigree make the puppy expensive?
The registration itself is cheap. What costs money is everything the pedigree implies: registered parents, documented breeding and a breeder who answers for what they produced.
